With everything going on right now, I figured I would do a post related to social isolation and COVID-19. As more states and countries are recommending social isolation, it is important to have activities to keep yourself busy.
In this post, I’m going to list some suggestions for activities that you can do at home while in social isolation. In times like these, it’s always important to look on the bright side. Staying busy is a good way to stay positive and keep your mind off things.
Make sure to keep up with the CDC’s website as they continue to post updates related to COVID-19, and even though I know you’ve heard it a million times, make sure to wash your hands often and stay home if you’re feeling sick in any way.

- Watch a new movie you’ve been wanting to see.
- Have a movie marathon.
- Watch your favorite television series.
- Watch a new television series.
The amount of television series available to stream is endless! Some of my favorites on Netflix are The Stranger, American Horror Story, and The Office.
Having a movie marathon is also a great idea when you’re stuck inside. Harry Potter marathons are my favorite!
#2 – Games
- Play a board game.
- Play video games.
- Put together a puzzle.
- Play cards.
- Make your own game.
The type of game you’d like to play is totally up to you! There’s lots of ideas out there.
#3 – Reading
- Read a new book.
- Re-read a past favorite.
- Read a book series.
- Read magazines or news articles.
Books are another activity that can help pass the time. Goodreads is a super fun app for reading challenges, book reviews, and connecting with other readers.
Kindle E-Readers can be a more affordable option for reading your favorite books. Kindle ebooks are typically cheaper than regular books because they’re provided electronically.
#4 – Making Artwork
- Coloring books
It’s important to keep your creative juices flowing when stuck inside for long periods of time, and doing artwork is a great way to do that. From drawing to crafts, there are so many ideas to choose from.
If you’re looking for an easier way to be creative, adult coloring books are a great resource. As a kid, coloring books were always so fun, and now they’re a popular activity for adults too!
#5 – Writing
- Write in a journal.
- Start a blog.
- Write poetry.
- Write a book or short story.
Whether its writing poetry or blog posts, writing is another great way to keep yourself busy. It’s also one of the easiest activities to get started with because all you need is a pen and paper!
Keeping a journal is also a great idea, and can help get your thoughts and feelings out. This can be incredibly therapeutic if you’re feeling worried or anxious about the COVID-19 pandemic.
#6 – Physical Activity
- Do an at-home workout.
- Watch an exercise video.
- Do an exercise challenge.
- Go for a bike ride.
- Dance to music.
- Go for a walk.
- Play fetch with the dog.
It is so important to always remain active, especially for your health. Even though you may have to practice social distancing or isolation, that doesn’t mean you can’t stay active.
There are many exercise videos and challenges out there to make working out fun. Physical activity is also a great way to spend time with those around you.
#7 – Meditate
- Guided meditation
- Mindfulness meditation
- Transcendental meditation
Meditating is another activity that can be really therapeutic and is beneficial in so many ways. Some of the scientifically-proven benefits of meditation include improving sleep and lowering blood pressure.
It’s also an activity that is typically done alone. So, meditation is especially good for social isolation. There are many types of meditation too so you can find the one that works best for you.
#8 – Social Networking
- Text or call friends and family.
- Go on social media (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter.)
- Look at Pinterest for home inspiration.
- Visit and read blogs.
- Send emails.
While you may not be able to interact with others in person, there is always social media. It’s not necessary to stay completely isolated, so why not spend time on social media?
#9 – Gardening
- Mow the lawn.
- Pull weeds.
- Add new plants to the garden.
- Trim trees and bushes (spring is here!)
- Tend to indoor and outdoor plants.
I may be biased with this one, because gardening is one of my favorite hobbies. Still, gardening is such a fulfilling activity that can definitely help keep you busy!
Even if you don’t have the space for a garden, there are so many ideas for indoor gardening with limited space. Pinterest has tons of ideas if you’re looking for inspiration.
#10 – Cleaning
- General cleaning around the house.
- Disinfecting high traffic surfaces.
- Organizing around the house.
- Gather items to give away, sell, or donate.
While this may be last on the list, it’s the most important. Not only should you be keeping your house clean by cleaning commonly-touched surfaces, this is also a good time to get some other cleaning done around the house.
This time can be used to organize and declutter around the house. You might realize new areas of your home that could use some extra attention.
I hope this list gives you some good ideas for activities you can do at home to stay busy while social distancing or isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic.
